Vidushi Manju Mehta

Smt. Manju Mehta belongs to a very well-known family of Jaipur and had her initial training in sitar from her elder brother Pt. Shahsimohan Bhatt. Her younger brother is the world renown Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (guitar). In her youth, she won central and state government scholarships and received training from Damodarlal Kabra. She went on to do her Master of Music in which she cleared first class.

She has had the good fortune of studying sitar under Pt. Ravi Shankar's guidance since 1980. In an appraisal of her her work, it is obvious the influence she's had on the field of art can be felt in almost every facet of music, including performance, composition, and teaching. She is an experienced teacher of thirty five years, and a large number of her students draw much inspiration and satisfaction from her work. She is also a trustee of the renowned organisation "Saptak", which is dedicated to the promotion of Indian classical music.

Mrs. Mehta has been a regular television and radio artist graded 'A', has participated in major music concerts in India and abroad, and has also been felicitated by a number of government and non-government organisations. She has received the prestigious Gaurav Puraskar by the Sangeet Natak Academy of Gujarat, and has to her credit the Tuesday night concert of 'Akashwani', Saturday National Programme of music of 'Akashwani', and Diwali Akashwani Sangeet Sammelan. She was honored by the Medical Association of Ahmedabad, and by "Triveni" Baroda on the World Theater day.

Her performances from time to time have earned tremendous applause. The real beauty of her music stems from her devotion and commitment to the tradition she represents. Through her music, she demonstrates the subtle features that breath life and beauty into the Indian Ragas. Her instinctively spontaneous sense of creativity exceeds the tunefulness of her melodies. The rigidity of her rhythmic control and the exquisite balance and proportion, that flows forth so naturarlly in her music, import freshness and consistency to her music. People know her as an artist whose performance is of the highest caliber, but it's really her warmth and sensitivity as a human being that makes her truly great, not to mention she is a teacher par excellence.
